Happy Birthday Mystic Moraine!
March, 2024
A Mystical Leap Year
Mystic Moraine Minerals proudly celebrated its opening anniversary on Feb 29th, marking 8 years of business, or 2 years counting leap years.
Jack Hoxie opened the doors to Mystic Moraine Minerals on Feb 29th, 2016. The shop has grown and changed tremendously in the past 8 years. First opening on the Academy St side of the building the store expanded to its current location at 500 W Milwaukee, keeping the Academy St space as a workshop and stock room.
In the past the store has hosted many music and crafting nights, inviting the community to socialize and learn together.
We are honored to have been your go to rock and mineral hub for the past years and cant wait to see what the future holds for Mystic Moraine.
Papa and Mama Rocks Return from Tuscon!
Jack and Melissa have returned from their journey to and from the largest mineral and gem show in the world, the Tuscon Gem and Mineral show. The staff and our customers are happy to welcome them safely home.
Their time in Arizona was filled with amazing minerals from the show, a few mining trips during their down time and time spent with family and friends in the area.
We are fortunate to usher in a new Mystic Moraine Minerals van to the Mystic fleet as sadly our trusty 1996 Ford was laid to rest shortly after arriving in Tuscon. After many years of hauling treasures and minerals its time was up. Heres to many new adventures, shows and minerals with our new van!
Here are some other photos of the magnificent minerals seen at the Tuscon Gem and Mineral show.

March Mineral of the Month - Pyrite
Pyrite is a brass-yellow mineral with a bright metallic luster. It has a chemical composition of iron sulfide (FeS2) and is the most common sulfide mineral. It forms at high and low temperatures and occurs, usually in small quantities, in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks worldwide. Pyrite is so common that many geologists would consider it to be a ubiquitous mineral.
The name "pyrite" is after the Greek "pyr" meaning "fire." This name was given because pyrite can be used to create the sparks needed for starting a fire if it is struck against metal or another hard material. Pieces of pyrite have also been used as a spark-producing material in flintlock firearms.
Pyrite has a nickname that has become famous - "Fool's Gold." The mineral's gold color, metallic luster, and high specific gravity often cause it to be mistaken for gold by inexperienced prospectors. However, pyrite is often associated with gold. The two minerals often form together, and in some deposits pyrite contains enough included gold to warrant mining.
